Thoughts on Using the Computer for Communications

Emails - Easy to communicate. But, it sure is hard to remember to update people once in a while, and darn, it's also hard to remember who you have told what.

Web site – So we started the web site with the purpose of keeping people informed on what we were doing, where we were going. I have failed miserably in putting pictures, etc. on the site. But….I have managed to keep our itinerary current with our plans, and lo, how many times have we heard “where are you now, or where are you going to be ?????.”

Blog – Granddaughters started theirs’ and Oh what a blessing to see pictures of our Great-grandchildren as they grow. And the blogs, with the ability to comment, provides a great opportunity for back & forth exchanges. And we have done postings with the idea of getting an exchange of ideas, “thoughts of the week”, and just general news. Some have done that, but, I must admit I am disappointed at the lack of response on many of them. Perhaps I am guilty too.

Facebook – So we were encouraged to join Facebook, the opportunity to connect with “friends”, exchange ideas, thoughts, and post pictures, etc. Well, we certainly have found many friends, relatives, and have posted some pictures, and looked at others’ pictures. But, I haven’t figured Facebook out – see everyone becoming friends with others, adding as relative, etc., but actual exchange of ideas, thoughts? In fact, when I answered someone’s question, it was there, and then disappeared! Postings from several days ago all of a sudden pop up, why? Confusing!

SO WHAT TO DO? Well, until someone can come up with a better answer, guess we will continue as is. Historically, most of us have been BAD with phone calls, letters, even emails, so at least we are maintaining some contact. We certainly know a lot more about our family than we did a couple of years ago.

I think you have just put into words how I have been feeling. I am having the toughest time getting the hang of Facebook while the kids insist that it is 'easy' and I 'just don't get it'. Duh - if I got it, it would be easy. As for the blog, I must admit I have not been good about keeping ours up lately. Seems like there is so much going on, but isn't that the whole idea behind the blog?

btw - absolutely love your thought of the week this week!

I second everything you have said! Facebook is confusing at first, but you will learn, cuz you are computer savy! Email is also hard to keep up with, as is the blog. But as long as there is the occassional post, I'll let it slide!!
BTW sorry I never called you back!! I was at church when you called me and I never got a chance to call back that day. And now today, this post has reminded me of your call!! SORRY! Apparently it wasn't life or death though! :)

I love all 3 of your latest "thoughts of the week"...especially the one about sleeping like a baby! Honestly, who wants to have to wake up every 3 hours and scream b/c you are hungry and have to wait for someone to wake up and feed you?!

I wish I could just leave the computer at work but with my phone able to update facebook, check email on the internet, and take pictures to post to facebook what else could be better. I think I am better at email and facebook than phone calls.

Bad thing about the computer is that we lose the ability to relate to each other face to face and by voice. Watch this generation and how they communicate--text and facebook.

I'd rather not sleep like a baby!As it says, they wake up all the time--oh yeah, that's happening more and more!

Forgot to comment about this weeks quote. Isn't theirs ours? Or is it ours is theirs! We live in a great country!

One of my co-workers does a fair amount of texting at work. Not sure I approve, but then, I'm OLD fashioned.

Well, as usual, I feel like I am a day late and a dollar short. I finally learned how to check blogs (and sometimes am able to leave comments), and now I hear, "Oh, I forgot, you aren't on Facebook. You ought to learn how to do it." Well, since Dave and Trina are paying my cell phone bill, I think I'm going to go back to phone calls. At least then, I know whether anyone at the other end got my message.

I'm going to agree that we communicate better than we have in the past. This is new territory for us grandkids. We didn't used to keep the aunts, uncles, and grandparents apprised of what we were doing...it was our parents job. ;-) So, I think that the best thing we can do is continue to strive towards some form of communication. For me, blogging is the easiest. There's too many people to try and call and/or copy on an email. At least this way I'm in control of what information I share and you're in control of whether or not you know about it. Since communication involves 2 parties it seems that this is the best option at this time.

Regarding Facebook, I don't think it's as great as everyone says it is. It's been great to find old classmates but it's very time consuming to try and fill everyone in on what's been going on for the last 10 years. If we didn't keep in touch before chances are we won't keep in touch after connecting on Facebook.

Just a few of my thoughts. For the record, I like the fact that we all have blogs. At least I can catch up on people's live if I've been AWOL for a few weeks/months without feeling like no one cares to tell me what's going on.
