Our Year - 2009

Without question, the highlight of 2009 was our cruise from Seattle through the inside passage of Alaska, accompanied by our children! What a GREAT trip, and to share it with our kids, just made it “Special”. As you can see from the picture, we were all in good form.
The year started out with us in Las Vegas. Jerry worked a part-time job for the County, we enjoyed playing in the casinos, following “The Fab”, a Beatles Tribute Band, and just enjoying the Las Vegas weather.

Early May, we headed for the State of Washington with our friends, Rick & Pam, ending up in Fall City (near Seattle) for Memorial Day. Unfortunately, that night, Jerry’s heart decided to go into A-Fib (irregular heart beat). 2 days in the hospital, heart into A-Flutter, cardiologist said “go on your cruise, have fun, we’ll take care of you when you come back”. I like that Dr.!

On May 30th, we left Seattle for a Great week’s cruise. On June 16th, cardioversion put my heart back into rhythm, and it was onto Winthrop, WA, and Silverline Resort. Winthrop is at the eastern end of the Cascade Scenic Highway, about 50 miles south of the Canadian border. We spent 2 ½ months working at Silverline (Laura in the office/store, Jerry being the “water” guy, and other maintenance. We had a good time, and some of our experiences, and trips are documented in earlier posts on this blog. Winthrop is in a beautiful part of our country!

After Labor Day, we headed south, going to Bayfield, CO (east of Durango, SW CO) to visit with friends Kay & Doug. There we visited Arches National Park, Mesa Verde National Park, and of course, the Four Corners. What a beautiful area. End of September it was back to Las Vegas, Jerry went back to work for the County, we did the Drs bit, and settled back into the Sin City routine. In Dec., we took a 2 week trip to Pilot Knob RV Resort (just west of Yuma, AZ) to visit friends Rick & Pam, Jerry & Karen, visit our Dentist in Mexico, and party! Now we are back in Vegas, looking forward to another GREAT year.

Oh yes, the family! Our 8th Great grandchild, Levi, was born in August to granddaughter Priscilla & Craig in Aurora, CO. Daughter Cindy, Joe, granddaughter Melissa & Kajsa moved into a new house in Marion, IN in Dec. Daughter Deb, John, granddaughter Sara & Cami moved into a new house in TX, after 25 years of marriage, all in the same house! Granddaughter Paula & family moved from MI to Florida in September – gee, we just have to go east sometime. So “our” family has now left Michigan.

That’s a brief recap of our year, it sure went FAST! In 8 days, we will celebrate our 51st anniversary, still together (they said it wouldn’t last), still in LOVE. We look forward to 2010 with anticipation, wondering just what great marvels we will experience. We will keep you posted.

Room With A View!

So much Fun! Tuesday night, around midnight, I felt a little funny, slight chest pain. Checking my pulse confirmed I was in A-Fib. A ride in an ambulance to the ER, where they confirmed my diagnosis. Tests showed NO heart attack, and pain disappeared shortly.
For 6 hours, I was in a cubicle, then, since I was being admitted to the hospital, moved to a hallway area, waiting for a bed to open up. The hospital was at 132% of occupancy! Pictures below.

Ok, a waiting game. Around 3:30pm, I checked my pulse, told the nurse I was back in rhythm. A call to the monitoring station confirmed it. Thank you for my meds. Can I go home? Only after the dr releases me. Around 5:30, "Jerry, we have a room, well, a better hallway bed for you - it even has a TV". I declined. About 6:00, dr arrives, agrees I can go home, but, of course it DOES take a while for paper work, finally left at 7:00.

Two more good things, they brought me supper, and even one for Laura! It was good. While Laura was sitting with me, she finished crocheting one pot holder, and completed 3 more. Nurses saw her working on them, and bought 2 of them!

In the pictures below, in the one view is the outside door where all patients brought by ambulance come in, the brown double door in the other picture is the entrance to the hospital from the ER. All patients and employees go through these doors - Bang!, Bang!, Bang! NO sleeping!, but you sure see a lot of people.

All is fine, we leave in the morning for the Yuma area for 2 weeks!

Old Butch

I can't believe I'm posting this, but.....here it is!

John was in the fertilized egg business. He had several hundred young layers (hens), called 'pullets,' and ten roosters to fertilize the eggs. He kept records, and any rooster not performing went into the soup pot and was replaced. This took a lot of time, so he bought some tiny bells and attached them to his roosters. Each bell had a different tone, so he could tell from a distance, which rooster was performing. Now, he could sit on the porch and fill out an efficiency report by just listening to the bells.
John's favorite rooster, old Butch, was a very fine specimen, but this morning he noticed old Butch's bell hadn't rung at all! When he went to investigate, he saw the other roosters were busy chasing pullets, bells-a-ringing, but the pullets, hearing the roosters coming, could run for cover. To John's amazement, old Butch had his bell in his beak, so it couldn't ring. He'd sneak up on a pullet, do his job and walk on to the next one. John was so proud of old Butch, he entered him in the Renfrew County Fair and he became an overnight sensation among the judges. The result was the judges not only awarded old Butch the No Bell Piece Prize but they also awarded him the Pulletsurprise as well. Clearly old Butch was a politician in the making. Who else but a politician could figure out how to win two of the most highly coveted awards on our planet by being the best at sneaking up on the populace and screwing them when they weren't paying attention.

Vote carefully next year, the bells are not always audible.--

Arches National Park, Moab, Utah

For those that don’t know, we are now in Las Vegas, in fact, I worked 40 hours last week! Our trip south was enjoyable, saw some VERY interesting things. Over the next few weeks, we will post some of those that we enjoyed.

Water and ice, extreme temperatures, and underground salt movement are responsible for the sculptured rock scenery of Arches National Park. There are over 2,000 cataloged arches in the area, ranging in size from 3-foot openings (the minimum considered to be an arch) to 306 feet, base to base. Today new arches are being formed and old ones destroyed by erosion, weathering, etc., gradually changing the landscape.

Just a view that shows some of the interesting formations within the Park.

This pic includes Balanced Rock, how would you like to be under it when it comes down? Yes, we were able to stand underneath it!

These arches are known as The Windows.

This area is known as the Cove of Caves, part is called Double Arch. Wow! The beauty of the seemingly carved forms is fantastic! We hope to go back and explore more of the Park soon.

This is Delicate Arch, probably the most photographed Arch of all.

Did You Know?

Ok, I've been BAD! I promise, a new & original posting this weekend. But, in the mean time, a forward from Sister-in-law, Beckie, that I just couldn't ignore. Don't know if it's all true or not, but it's sure food for thought..................Enjoy and just try to contemplate the numbers! So What Does It All Mean?

"Cactus"
Reportedly Sony played this mind-blowing video at their executive conference this year. Quite astonishing, and thought provoking. Click on the link below...http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cL9Wu2kWwSY

The 5 Pledges

At the end of his program last Friday, Glenn Beck showed the above "Pledges", and said,
"If your politician doesn't believe, support or reflect these beliefs in their actions then they aren't supporting you. More importantly, they aren't supporting, protecting or defending the Constitution."
What do you think????

Winthrop, Washington

Downtown Winthrop looks like the set from a Western movie, with false-front wooden buildings, hitching rails and boardwalks all helping to create the illusion of a 19th century frontier town. An ordinance says that your business has to look old and worn out, staying in the old West character.

Visitors enjoy rodeos, cattle drives, music festivals and loads of parties, from wine tastings to balloon rides. You can find diverse lodging from campgrounds, RV parks, cabins to luxurious resorts. Shopping includes gift shops, art galleries, a great variety of restaurants, and even an ACE Hardware.

I’ve included a few pictures, enjoy. The last picture is of Sheri’s Sweet Shoppe, which has such things as gourmet chocolates, hot dogs, and ICE CREAM! With some 50+ flavors, ½ of them are home-made, Ummmm, Good!

Harts Pass, Pacific Crest Trail

Three weeks ago, we ventured up to Harts Pass, the highest elevation you can drive in the State of Washington. The first pic shows some of the narrow, one lane road. Yes, it really drops off a long way on the left.

This picture shows Laura standing on the Pacific Crest Trail, at this point the distance to Canada is 31 miles. Melissa, weren't you on this part of the PCT?

There is our/my goal, as Laura decided she couldn't walk the 1/4 mile climb up to the Tower. This tower is Not manned, and actually not safe to climb.
But I made it, elevation 7488 feet, and what a view from the top of Slater Peak. In this picture in the right center is a large, lighter area in the sky. That is Snow-covered Mt. Baker, 53 miles away. I took a lot of pictures up here, but have opted to try showing a short video of the view. Not professional, but it does give an idea of the look out over the Cascade Mts of Northern Washington. Also, just below the road midway through the video, you can see the Pacific Crest Trail as it winds toward Canada.

Thirtymile Fire

Our RV Park is at 2000 feet elevation, but surrounded by mountains that reach up to nearly 9000 feet. I have commented on our high temperatures and lack of rain. Being from Michigan, we tend to forget the dangers of forest fires, those started by lightning, and those started by careless humans.

Several miles north of us, where the road ends about 12 miles from the Canadian Border in the Okanogan National Forest, is the site of a devastating fire in 2001.
This memorial was erected in honor of the 4 young lives that were lost that day. It seems that nearly everyone visiting the site wants to leave some momento of their visit. I have never before seen such a display.

This is the view of the valley across the road from the memorial, now 8 years after the fire! It still looks devastating, but the forest is renewing itself.

We were reminded of our visit to this site last night, as all day we commented on how hazy it seemed to be, and then toward dusk, it seemed to get heavier. The sunset was weird colors, the result of the smoke in the air from fires several miles away. There is one fire a few miles west that is being watched, but not fought, as it is no danger to anyone, and in an area that is difficult to reach.
We now have a "no campfire" status even in the campground where we water every day, and some days, we observe helicopters flying over with their water buckets, heading out to help with the fire fighting efforts. There is a Smoke Jumpers Base just 5 miles south of us, we drove by yesterday. Lots of activity, helicopters standing by, just waiting to be called into action. Let's hope they aren't.

Seniors On A Road Trip

While on a road trip, an elderly couple stopped at a roadside restaurant for lunch. After finishing their meal, they left the restaurant, and resumed their trip. When leaving, the elderly woman unknowingly left her glasses on the table, and she didn't miss them until they had been driving for about forty minutes. By then, to add to the aggravation, they had to travel quite a distance before they could find a place to turn around, in order to return to the restaurant to retrieve her glasses.

All the way back, the elderly husband became the classic grouchy old man. He fussed and complained, and scolded his wife relentlessly during the entire return drive. The more he chided her, the more agitated he became. He just wouldn't let up for a single minute. To her relief, they finally arrived at the restaurant. As the woman got out of the car, and hurried inside to retrieve her glasses, the old geezer yelled to her, “While you're in there, you might as well get my hat and the credit card.”

This coming week is National Senior Mental Health Week. You can do your part by remembering to contact at least one unstable Senior to show you care.

Well — my job is done!

Goat Peak

The gal at the Ranger Station said "you need to go up to Goat Peak". She talked about the view, the Ranger on duty, etc. Talked with a lady in the Park who said they had gone up the day before, and spent over 2 hours with "Lightning Bill", who was full of history, stories of the area, stories of fires, just all sorts of fun info, oh, and able to go up in the Fire Tower. Goat Peak is one of 2 manned fire towers in the area.

So today, we headed out. The picture below is the first view of the tower.

This picture is of some of the "wildlife" we saw on the way up" Yes, we also saw deer, birds, chipmunks, etc.
9 miles after the first picture of the tower, we reached the trailhead, with this sign. What it says is that the trail is a short, steep climb. Now, recognize that our Park is at 2000 ft elevation, this trailhead is at 5500. The trail we are about to take goes from 5500 ft to 7000 ft at the fire tower. Oh, that's right, the trail is 2 1/2 miles to the tower, with the last 1/2 mile along a ridge with GREAT views. I don't know what "short" is.

The next couple of pictures prove that we made it to the top of the mountain, but, gee, there is still the 1/2 mile along the ridge to the fire tower. It is at this point, that we meet a couple coming down from the fire tower, they inform us that it is locked, NOBODY there! Darn, no "Lightning Bill", and we are TIRED!

So there is the GOAL that we had set out for, but with no "Lightning Bill", we just didn't have the energy to finish the trip. At this point, I should point out some facts that we really had ignored at the trailhead. As you can see from the picture above, we are probably only 200 ft elevation below the Fire Tower. That means, that in 2 miles (10,560 ft) we climbed about 1300 ft. That means an AVERAGE slope of around 13%, some was definitely more. Oh, did I mention, we forgot our walking sticks? We found a couple of sticks to use on the way down, but it still took almost as long to go down, as up, as footing was slippery, etc.

Yes, we made it down, and feel blessed that we were able to make the trip. All in all, a great day, one we will always remember. Not bad for a couple of 69 1/2 year-olds, BUT...."never again!"

Silverline Resort, Winthrop, WA

Ok, so I’m doing a Blog posting, in hopes that some of you will follow my example. In fact, I’m recommitting to a weekly posting – How About You????

Silverline Resort, near Winthrop, Washington is on Pearrygin Lake. Having a surface area of 212 acres, it is a little smaller than Long Lake, at 225 acres. No islands, a little wider. Other than Silverline on the north end, there is one piece of private property next us, the rest of the shoreline is a State Park with 2 campgrounds on the east side, the south & west sides are state owned, with no public access.

Silverline. Of 50 RV sites, only 24 are gravel, the rest are on grass, as are the 30 tent sites, plus 2 group sites which can handle either. As the pictures will show, motorhomes and 5th wheels park on the grass – I still cringe a little as I see one of them pull onto the nice green grass! However, the sites are allowed to “rest” after being used for several days, in order to keep them green. For instance, this weekend, we turned away campers, but had 4 sites empty.

My job is “The Water Guy”, (actually 2 of us), we start the pump at 8:00 am, and it may run as late as midnight. Every open site & open areas get at least 45 minutes of water every day, some more. Some areas are underground sprinklers, others we use hoses & sprinklers. We have people asking for the grass sites, just a GREAT place for kids to be.

Here are a few pictures that I took. Sorry, but I had trouble loading them, so they don't seem to be expanding to full size.

This is a view of the State Park from the top of our resort yesterday.

This is a view down the lake, the other State Park campground, with a swimming beach is around the point to the left. At the end of the lake is the barn from the old homestead, the house that stood by the tree burned the 4th of July.

This is a picture of our beach, boat area, docks. 3 docks, one fishing only are on the water.

This shows some of the camp sites adjoining the Common Area, view of the lake.

The other side of the Common Area, also on grass, and views of the lake.

Yes, we do have regular RV sites with full hookups.

This is just a tranquil view of the lake on a quieter day, also from the top of the Resort. I should mention, yesterday, our temp reached 98 degrees, but this morning, it was 60 degrees. We have always gotten down into the 50's at night, most days in the 80's, and sunny. Even had a campfire last night after dark. If you wish to see more pics of the Resort, use this link, and take the "Tour". http://www.silverlineresort.com/tour.html

My Living Will

Last night, considering my heart issues lately, Laura & I were talking. I said to her, 'I never want to live in a vegetative state, dependent on some machine and fluids from a bottle to keep me alive. That would be no quality of life at all, If that ever happens, just pull the plug.'

So she got up, unplugged my computer, and threw out my wine. DANG!

Life Is Good!

Ok, so I’ve been bad. Now time to update the blog.

The cruise to Alaska was GREAT! The time spent with Cindy, Deb, Rich, Joe, & Leslie really made it special – Thanks kids. The weather couldn’t have been better, we were so fortunate. Yes, we gained weight, got some sun, what more could we ask for. I will post some pics in the future, but for now, if you can, visit Deb & Rich’s Facebook sites, they have posted several.

So my heart didn’t cooperate by converting on its’ own, so Tuesday, June 16th, Dr tried cardioversion. It was successful the first try, and my heart is now back in normal rhythm. Dr. said “You can leave, just stay in touch, sent me some test results”. I can do that.

So now we are at Silverline Resort, Winthrop, WA. Their web site is http://www.silverlineresort.com/ Got here Thursday, put to work on Sat. Like our bosses, Kristi & Dan. It’s a small RV Park, but busy! Full this last weekend. We do like our location.

As I type & post this, we are sitting here enjoying our gas campfire, music, and a glass of wine – Life Is Good!

Hospital Visit

For those that have asked (and those that haven't), here are the facts. After playing Polish Poker with friends Monday evening, I started having funny feelings. Tightening in the chest, stopped to rest taking the garbage to the dumpster, a couple of blocks. Took blood pressure, and realized heart beat was irregular. Called 911, and had an ambulance ride at midnight. First diagnosed as A-Fib, eventually became Atrial-Flutter. After several tests, etc., tried to correct with cardioversion (electric shock, same as in 2000), but did not work.

Kept in hospital, dr assigned was friend Rick's cardiologist. Put on medicine to try and correct, but has not converted me yet. He said "It's not life threatening, go on your cruise, we will take care of it when you get back." I like this doctor!

I'm not experiencing as severe symptoms as Mon nite, so looking forward to a GREAT cruise.

Upon our return, if I don't convert on my own, we will again try cardioversion. If that does not work, then they will have to go in and interrupt (ablate) a portion of the abnormal electrical conduction pathway. Will be similar to angioplasty, but using an electrical charge. Usually successful.

Really looking forward to seeing the kids tomorrow, and enjoying our Cruise! We will NOT have internet access. so will be back on line the 7th of June. Will check for phone messages whenever we are in US ports, so feel free to contact us that way.

Palouse Falls, Washington

Our friends, Jerry & Karen, took us for a ride into beautiful SE Washington, to visit Palouse Falls. The Falls are on the Palouse River, about 4 miles upstream from the confluence with the Snake River. The canyon at the Falls is about 377 ft deep, the Falls are about 186 ft high. Another beautiful, and interesting feature is the rock formation near the top of the Falls, as you can see on these photos. We just HAVE to go back and do some hiking, there are trails to the top of the Falls, (you can see people in my photos) and to the bottom of the Falls. Also, a few days before we were there, a Tyler Bradt ran the falls in a kayak, setting an unofficial world record for the highest waterfall run. I have included a link to a video of that event, hopefully it will work for you.

Just For Fun 2 Answers, Also, Our Trip North

The babies.

Hope you all had fun trying to figure who the babies are.

Maria, you came close. You had the right family, but the wrong sex, it's actually Domenica. Laura says, "just look at her photos on Facebook, you can see the same face."

The other one, well, the cute cheeks are what made me do this in the first place. Cindy, very close, here is the companion picture from that day. Smile Paula!

Our trip North.

Left Las Vegas on Sunday, stayed just north of St. George, UT for 2 nights. Visited Zion National Park on Monday. Tue & Wed, we covered 900+ miles, and parked on the shore of the Columbia River in Oregon Wed night, stayed 2 nights there. Beautiful site, nice view of the river, but quite breezy, not comfortable sitting outside.

Friday we came on up to Soap Lake, will be here until Thurs. Met up with friends Jerry & Karen, having a ball getting caught up on everything.

"On The Road Again!"

Yep, we leave Las Vegas tomorrow morning. In light of my Thought of the Week, guess I will turn "Blondie" (our GPS) on, avoid getting lost.

I'm still waiting for someone to correctly identify either of the pictures posted earlier this week.

Not sure what internet access we will have until late next week when we get to Washington. But will try to connect somewhere on the road.

Just For Fun 2

This is just for fun, primarily for the family. Do you know who these babies are? If so, send me an email, I will give you credit in my next posting (I promise). Please, don't give it away in a comment yet. Hope you enjoy!

Just For Fun!

This posting is late. I had every intention of getting on my Soap Box again about the news media, politics, the economy, and the tragedies we hear about every day. 300 dead in an earthquake, 14 dead in a shooting rampage, a little girl found in a suitcase. We have people like Nancy Grace making whole careers bringing us stories every day about Casey Anthony, etc. Then I saw that 37,313 people lost their lives in traffic accidents in the US in 2008, WHERE is the OUTRAGE on THAT!

But then my son said I watch too much NEWS, he’s right! So we decided to continue our project of putting our old pictures & slides on the computer, listening to music, and just reminiscing as the project moves forward.

Today, we just want to share a couple of old photos we ran across, hope my kids don’t kill me for this one. Enjoy!

Voting for The President of The USA

Just couldn't resist!

In a Seattle Washington college classroom, they were discussing the qualifications to be President of the United States . It was pretty simple - the candidate must be a natural born citizen of at least 35 years of age.

However, one girl in the class immediately started in on how unfair was the requirement to be a natural born citizen. In short, her opinion was that this requirement prevented many capable individuals from becoming President. The class was taking it in and letting her rant, but everyone's jaw hit the floor when she wrapped up her argument by stating, 'What makes a natural born citizen any more qualified to lead this country than one born by C-section?'

Yep, these are the 18 year olds that just voted for the President of the United States!

This is for all those musicians who aspire to perform in Carnegie Hall sometime. There are ALL kinds of talent which could get you there.

Random Thoughts

Jobs - We have accepted jobs near Winthrop, WA for the summer. We will be working at Silverline Resort (they have a web site), Laura in the store, reservations, checkins, and I will be doing lawn maintenance, security, whatever. 20-30 hours a week each, will leave time for sightseeing, rest, etc. Starting Jun 15th until after Labor Day.

President Obama – Ran on the slogan “Change we can believe in”. What kind of change is it when the majority of his appointees are from the Clinton & Bush administrations?

Politicians who cheat on their taxes – Why are they soooo sorry when they get caught? Why aren’t they going to JAIL!

Casino Freebies – Have to say we enjoy the freebies, slot tournaments, gift giveaways, free buffets. All it takes is some time, of which we have lots.

The Fab – Group which plays only Beatles music, free entertainment at Marilyn’s Lounge, Eastside Cannery. One member is an old friend of Rich’s, they are GOOD! Check out their web site “TheFab.com”

The Media – Why does the (left leaning) media continue to treat Obama with kid gloves, but hound Sara Palin’s family?

Global Warming – Does anyone in Michigan really believe it after the past couple of winters? Oh, weather in Las Vegas has been pretty good, riding the scooter to work every day.

Obama’s Puppy – Has anybody noticed that Obama’s puppy is usually standing close by when they appear in public? – Oh wait, that’s VP Biden, on a short leash!

Feel free to comment on any/or all of the above. Let’s have some FUN!

Thoughts on Using the Computer for Communications

Emails - Easy to communicate. But, it sure is hard to remember to update people once in a while, and darn, it's also hard to remember who you have told what.

Web site – So we started the web site with the purpose of keeping people informed on what we were doing, where we were going. I have failed miserably in putting pictures, etc. on the site. But….I have managed to keep our itinerary current with our plans, and lo, how many times have we heard “where are you now, or where are you going to be ?????.”

Blog – Granddaughters started theirs’ and Oh what a blessing to see pictures of our Great-grandchildren as they grow. And the blogs, with the ability to comment, provides a great opportunity for back & forth exchanges. And we have done postings with the idea of getting an exchange of ideas, “thoughts of the week”, and just general news. Some have done that, but, I must admit I am disappointed at the lack of response on many of them. Perhaps I am guilty too.

Facebook – So we were encouraged to join Facebook, the opportunity to connect with “friends”, exchange ideas, thoughts, and post pictures, etc. Well, we certainly have found many friends, relatives, and have posted some pictures, and looked at others’ pictures. But, I haven’t figured Facebook out – see everyone becoming friends with others, adding as relative, etc., but actual exchange of ideas, thoughts? In fact, when I answered someone’s question, it was there, and then disappeared! Postings from several days ago all of a sudden pop up, why? Confusing!

SO WHAT TO DO? Well, until someone can come up with a better answer, guess we will continue as is. Historically, most of us have been BAD with phone calls, letters, even emails, so at least we are maintaining some contact. We certainly know a lot more about our family than we did a couple of years ago.

Dutchess!!

So today, I'm just going to post some pictures of Dutchess. She has been just a GREAT partner in our past several years. Yes, she is getting older, but still continues to give us a lot of love.

Today, one of the neighbors came to visit, we didn't even let them get together

The last picture is Dutchess and Leslie's dog Scarlett. And yes, Dutchess let Scarlett know who was boss of the house
